8 Thoughts on Creating Great Partnerships

Collaboration is crucial in today's culture. Great organizations seem to always have a strong ability to partner well. Partnerships are not always easy though. Teaming up with one another can result in true synergy. Or many times can result in ultimate failure.
Here are a few thoughts on why creating Great Partnerships is a must for you and your organization:
1. Partnerships allows you to share risk and reward. Creating less downside, and potentially way more upside always make sense.
2. Partnerships create innovation, breakthrough and discovery. Working with others allows for input from outside your "normal" circle of staff or key team members.
3. Ministries and Churches have to work harder to create partnerships. Partnerships are very common in the business world, but for some reason in the not-for-profit world it's difficult to work together. Ministries and churches don't partner well, but when they do, it can be revolutionary.
4. Kingdom building. If we truly wish to reach our mission with the greatest velocity possible, we have to work with others. Achieving our vision and mission is much more possible when working together.
5. Good partnerships start with a deep knowledge of the other. Know your partners well before entering into one.
6. Transparency is crucial. Authenticity and honesty make for long term impact.
7. Strength/Strength. Build partnerships on each other's strengths, not necessarily on trying to improve a weakness.
8. Good fences make for good partnerships. Many times we don't take time to spell out all the details of a partnership in full disclosure. It is crucial to put everything on paper, in an agreement, and make sure all the details are spelled out.

5 Things Pastors And Business Leaders Need To Know About Change Management

Nobody likes change but a baby.  This is one of my favorite sayings. However, the fact remains change is a reality all leaders must not only deal with, but initiate.  One leader who is initiating a lot of change currently Bryan Miles, the CEO and Co-founder of Miles AG, a conglomerate company consisting of eaHELP, Render, Ellipsis, and one of my favorite organizations MAG Bookkeeping.

There are three certainties in life – death, taxes and change. As a leader, change is something I have to embrace. If I’m not ready to do that, I’m not ready to be a leader. Leadership is simply not a static endeavor. 
We’re experiencing some changes – good ones – here at Miles AG. I’ve lead Miles AG through a lot of changes, and I’ve learned that leading through change might be disruptive, but it doesn’t have to be complex.
Here are a few things I’ve learned about change management.
Vision is Job One
Regardless of how we evolve, I need to remain committed to our vision for this industry.  When I falter, my team falters. Staying laser-focused on our Mission is motivating and exciting for me and my team.
Transparent Communication Inspires
When change happens, questions and doubts are inevitable. I risk demotivating my team when I don’t answer candidly. Big organizations like ours can stop communicating, especially during times of change, but embracing communication … even over-communication for a time …  makes all the difference.
A Bias for Action Leads to Creativity
Talking about change isn’t enough – implementation is where the magic happens. Getting caught up in the “what if’s” delays future creativity. Once my leadership team and I have identified the need and path to change, it’s go time. And with the quickness!
People Might Say Goodbye
The changes we make as leaders might lead to a few people saying goodbye … and that’s ok. Lasting change needs advocates, not critics. As a leadership team, we try to convert the critics, but if we can’t, and they decide to leave, we wish them well in whatever they pursue next. True progress comes from people who are 100% sold on what we’re doing next.
Persistence Pays Off
I’m an amatuer climber – scaling summits whenever I can. They only way to the top is putting one foot in front of the other regardless of how the wind changes or how slow the progress. Leadership is the same way. The path to change might feel slow… but persistence (one step at time) is the backbone to a thriving organization … the only way to the top.

Why Pastors Should Preach the Gospel in Every Sermon

Believe it or not doing something as simple as giving the Gospel in every sermon can literally transform your church. Although I now lead an evangelism training ministry for teenagers called Dare 2 Share, for ten years I was the preaching pastor at a church I helped to plant in the Denver area.
The very first Sunday I made a public commitment to give the Gospel in every service at some point during the sermon. What happened as a result? People began to bring their yet-to-be-reached friends, neighbors, classmates and co-workers to church!
Within ten years God blessed our church with over a thousand people attending on a regular basis, the vast majority of which came to Jesus through the people of our church. Our mission savvy congregation knew that every Sunday the Gospel would be clearly given so they relentlessly and relationally invited their co-workers, friends and neighbors to come check out our church.
Today the church is over 3,000 strong and is making and multiplying disciples in a massive way. My life-long friend, co-church planter and the current lead pastor of this Gospel advancing church, Rick Long, continues to “gospelize” every sermon and has seen outstanding results. This church is well known in our city for its excitement for evangelism.
So, in addition to building your church with new disciples, why preach the Gospel in every sermon? Here are four more solid reasons:

1.  It honors Jesus.

Describing his preaching style Charles Spurgeon once said, “I take my text and make a beeline for the cross.”  The scarlet thread of redemption, which starts in Genesis and goes all the way through to Revelation, takes every reader straight to Jesus, his blood stained cross and an empty tomb. It is the preacher’s job to study a passage, find that thread, pull it and then preach it.
There’s not a page of Scripture that doesn’t point to Jesus in some way. So to be true and accurate expositors and faithful and effective preachers demands that we explain the Gospel in every sermon. To fail to do so is like a lawyer making a case without a closing argument or a comedian who sets up a joke but never gives the punch line.
We honor Jesus when we honor his Gospel. We honor his gospel when we preach it clearly (Colossians 4:4), compellingly (2 Corinthians 5:11) and consistently (1 Corinthians 2:2.)

2.  It transforms the Christian.

1 Corinthians 1:18 makes it clear that “The preaching of the cross is foolishness to the perishing but to those of us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
I love this passage because it refers to Christians as those “who are being saved.” Sure, we’ve already been saved from the penalty of sin (eternal death in hell) but we are also being saved from the power of sin in our day-to-day lives.
This means that there’s never a point in a Christian’s life when the Gospel should get old. It is new every morning. It is needed every night. The same Gospel that saves us also sanctifies us.
Why else would Jesus instruct his disciples in Matthew 26:26-28 to consistently remember his broken body and shed blood through the ordinance of communion? His shed blood and broken body on the cross are to be central to our church services.
Some believe (like me) that when the disciples broke bread in Acts 2:42-47 it was a daily thing. By the time we get to the church of Corinth in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 it seems like Communion is at the minimum a part of the weekly gathering of believers.
My point isn’t to say how often you should do communion in your church services. Do as the Spirit of the Lord directs you. My point is that, if it was done weekly in the early church (which there is every indication that it was) then the Gospel was given in every service. Those unbelievers attending their services (1 Corinthians 14:24,25) would always be exposed to the Gospel message when communion was given.
Communion shows the lost person that the way of salvation comes through the cross and reminds the believer that the pathway to sanctification is through the cross! Giving the Gospel in every sermon does the same powerful thing.

3.  It “gospelizes” the church.

Tell me if this doesn’t sound exciting, “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them.” Acts 4:31-34
The focus on mission by the early church led to their gatherings being fueled by prayer, filled with the Spirit, and flowing with excitement! There was an atmosphere of anticipation for the miraculous! The early believers were fully gospelized and they were committed to gospelize others!
Their focus on advancing the Gospel produced a brand of deep-seeded unity that most pastors would only dare dream of! It resulted in jaw-dropping generosity and Christ-like selflessness among the early believers that caused the watching world to pause. When the people in your congregation rally around the Gospel message and mission they will begin to get “gospelized!”  This will accelerate this same kind of unity, generosity and selflessness that defined the early church.

4.  It moves people from death to life.

“I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”  Acts 26:17,18
When we give the Gospel we are literally being used by God to bring the lost from death to life, from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to the kingdom of God. Think about it this way, if you had the cure to cancer and there were those in your life who had the cure to cancer, would you tell them? Not only would you tell them the cure you’d do everything in your persuasive powers to get them to take it. If they resisted you’d persist until they ingested or injected the cure.
In the same way there are those who attend your church who are ravaged by the cancer of sin. Call out to God on behalf of their souls and then do everything in your persuasive powers to get them to say “yes” to the cure…Jesus!
Does all this mean that the only thing you preach on Sunday morning is the Gospel? Of course not! But it means that, no matter whatever subject you are preaching on, you make a salvation segue to Christ and him crucified at some point and extend to the audience the opportunity to put their faith and trust in Jesus.
You, like Spurgeon, take your text and make a beeline for the cross!

How to Increase the Spiritual Return on a Sermon

Every Sunday something happens over 400,000 times in North America:  A pastor preaches a sermon. Have you ever wondered, though, how much impact sermons really make? Consider these shocking statistics.

If an average sermon lasts about 30 minutes and if roughly 56 million people attend on an average Sunday, then church attenders in North America’s churches spend this amount of time listening to our sermons each week.
  • 23,000,000 man hours
  • which equals 958,000 days
  • which equals 136,904 weeks
  • which equals 2,632 years
And if the average pastor spends 10 hours preparing a sermon, all together pastors will spend the following amount of time in weekly sermon prep.
  • 4,000,000 man hours
  • which equals 166,666 days
  • which equals 23,800 weeks
  • which equals 457 years
Adding it all together, each week sermons gobble up three centuries of man-hours. If you multiply that over a year’s time . . . well, you do the math.
When I calculated this number, it boggled my mind. That statistic then begged this question.
What spiritual return is our preaching giving us?
I know we can’t measure the eternal impact from our sermons. However, the amount of time we invest in them and the time people invest in listening to them should cause us to pause and evaluate.
Take a few moments and consider these ten questions. As you read them ask yourself if should make some changes to maximize your sermons’ spiritual impact.
  1. Do I spend sufficient time preparing my heart to preach (ie: spiritual disciplines, stillness, character development)?
  2. Do I spend sufficient time with people to understand the issues they face that need a word from God?
  3. Am I being true to what the biblical writers intended when I preach?
  4. Am I willing to get honest feedback from people who can help me improve my preaching?
  5. Do I make my preaching more about Him and less about me and what others may think about my preaching?
  6. What am I doing to improve my study and presentation skills?
  7. Am I willing to preach on unpopular subjects about which the Scripture speaks?
  8. Do I spend sufficient time thinking about ways that could maximize the listener’s attention to increase their retention of my sermons?
  9. Do I always tie my sermons to the overarching redemptive theme of the Gospel?
  10. Do I approach preaching as a hallowed trust?
Perhaps the venerable Haddon Robinson captured the essence of good preaching when we wrote this in his excellent book, Biblical Preaching.
When you get right down to it, preaching is like farming. I often say, “Lord, here I am. As far as I can tell, I’ve tried to fill my sack with good seed. I’ve done my homework, I think my attitude is right, and it’s the best, most interesting seed I’ve got. I’m going to scatter it now, Lord. So here goes. We’ll see what comes up in the field.” Then, once I’ve sown the seed, I do what farmers do: I go home and rest.

Last week, I wrote a blog suggesting an alternative theory to the Dones. Dones are those individuals who are no longer engaged in church life. They are different from the Nones because they still consider themselves faithful to Christ but no longer committed or connected to a local church. They are “done.” They’ve found a lot of things to do on the weekend, but church involvement isn’t one of them.
photo-1430747562296-5556d17a15a5 I suggested one of the reasons Dones leave the church is that we never call on them to do anything significant with their lives. We ask them to serve on committees, teach preschoolers, and give to the budget, but we never call them to an adventure of faith that challenges their capacities. They’ll stay involved as long as their children do, but generally, when the children leave home, the Dones leave church. That’s an over simplification, but I use this example to make my point. For some reason, or maybe for many reasons, the Dones decide their church involvement is no longer worth their time.
My point was this: our members do a lot of incredible things during the week, but they’re never asked to engage in an all-consuming way in church. I think a lot of people are bored. We never give them a chance to save the world.
My friend, Scot McKnight, reminded me that according to research found in works like Josh Packard and Ashleigh Hope’s book, Church Refugees: Sociologists reveal why people are DONE with church but not their faith, the Dones were once the most active people in their churches.
True, they faithfully attended every committee meeting and chaperoned youth trips, but they were capable of so much more.
In Ephesians 4, Paul writes: “And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ…” (Ephesians 4:11–12)
Churches are going to have to rethink their relationship with their members. Members are no longer consumers to be served. They are ministers to be trained. They are missionaries to be deployed. The role of the clergy isn’t to DO the ministry but to serve as the training faculty for those who do serve. There are some things Jesus will teach you only in obedience. There are miracles you see only as you engage.
As people serve, they see God at work. This drives them to worship. As they are challenged to follow deeper, they are driven to discipleship.
People come to church to be trained and sent out to serve. They return for healing, rest, more training, and then they’re sent out again.
The first Reformation gave the Word back to the people. The second Reformation is giving ministry back to them. When the Dones hear this, they’ll realize they aren’t done yet.

Lessons on our 10-year anniversary.  Also: Why I Love and Hate Election Year...


This past month, my wife and I celebrated 10 years of marriage... which is also how long we've been in our current leadership role!  As I reflected, it struck me that our circumstances have become exponentially more stressful and challenging over the years, and we've had our fair share of fights and failures.  However, we've always grown from our setbacks and mistakes, and grown as a team — and that's made the difference.

It's like Pixar president Ed Catmull wrote in one of the best articles on management and creativity I've read: "Management’s job is not to prevent risk but to build the capability to recover when failures occur."  We can't prevent risk and failure in relationships and leadership, but we can build our capacity to learn and grow from those things.

Here's a conversation I had with my wife about some of our biggest lessons over the past decade.  Hope it encourages you in your relationships and leadership roles!

I've been thinking a lot about steps of action I can take, in light of political and racial tensions and debates in the U.S.  It's a great first step to spark discussion, but it's even more constructive to think about what we can put into practice after football season is over, or after Election Day has come and gone.

10 Signs a Leader May Need a New Challenge

One of my favorite writers is Liz Wiseman. She has spoken at the Willow Creek Summit a couple of times. She has authored these two great books that I love… Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter and Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work. In one chapter of Rookie Smarts she lists 10 signs that might indicate you need a new challenge. As you read these, ask yourself if they reflect your current world.

10 Signs a Leader Needs a New Challenge*

As you read each one, mentally check the ones true of you.
  1. Things are running smoothly.
  2. You are consistently getting positive feedback.
  3. Your brain doesn’t have to work hard to be successful.
  4. You don’t prepare for meetings because you already know the answers.
  5. You’ve stopped learning something new every day.
  6. You are busy but bored.
  7. You’re taking longer showers in the morning and you take your time getting to work.
  8. It makes you tired to think you could be doing the same job a year from now.
  9. You’ve become increasingly negative and can’t identify why.
  10. You’re spending a lot of time trying to fix other people’s problems.
So how many did you check?
Liz says that two or more of these experiences indicate you need to, ‘renew your rookie smarts,’ (approach your ministry with a beginner’s mindset to become a better learner). And if three or more are true of you, you need a new challenge.
When I read this list, it made me think deeply about how I approach my role as a lead pastor.
  • I don’t want to get stuck on cruise control because things may go well.
  • I don’t want to look back one day and realize I squandered God-given opportunities because I was taking the path of least resistance.
  • I don’t want to get too comfortable by using what worked well before.
  • I don’t want to become so drained by other people’s problems that I have little energy to think into the future.
  • I do want to approach each day from a possibility mindset, how God can use me to make an eternal Kingdom impact.
As you lead, guard against becoming complacent and comfortable.
Relish your wins.
Enjoy the successes God gives you.
Take joy in God’s pleasure in you.
And ponder and heed these words of Joshua.
Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. (Josh. 1.8, NLT)

I grew up in a little Baptist church that was right across the street from a cotton mill. A lot of the members of our church worked in the cotton mill. I heard my pastor say “I’ll preach in overalls if it will make your friends more comfortable. I had no idea what he meant—none—until I went to work at the cotton mill one summer. (To make sure I studied in college, my dad made me work in the cotton mill.)
photo-1461280360983-bd93eaa5051b-1 I knew a lot of those people because they lived in the area. Overalls were all they had. The darker blue the overalls, the newer they were. My pastor understood that sometimes a coat and tie would be intimidating. Why? Because that’s what the mill “boss man” wore. That’s what the mill owner wore. If you walked into a church as a mill worker and you saw coats and ties, you would think you were in a church for the mill owner. Sociologists will tell you that mill workers and mill owners don’t go to the same church. “I’ll preach in overalls,” the pastor said, “if it will make you feel more comfortable—if it will make you feel at ease.”
We overlook this thing of hospitality. We think it is a gift used to entertain in your home. The gift of hospitality is how you receive someone into your own life, how you accommodate them and how you help them feel at ease and comfortable with you. Then you can begin a conversation to hear their story, and you can have the opportunity to tell them the story of Jesus and how Jesus found you. You know people like this who have this wonderful gift, and you always feel better about yourself when you’re with them. You always like yourself more when you walk away from the conversation.
But too many times in church we think you have to catch “clean” fish. We want the fish already filleted. You’re like the kid from the city who goes on his first fishing trip. The line tugs and he reels it up and the fish isn’t in a box. Now what in the world would you think about an emergency doctor who, when the patient was rolled in, would say, “This patient is sick! Look how bloody this guy is. Clean him up before I work on him”? What would you do if there was a search and rescue team and a diver gets in a helicopter, looks down and says, “Look how wet that guy is. When I rescue him he’s going to get me soaked.”
We put up these barriers to make sure people are really serious, and they become walls that are too high for people to get over. We all have friends who say they will come to church just as soon as they “fix it.” They’ll tell me, “Mike, just as soon as I work this out…”
We forget how lost and confused people are. It wasn’t unusual for me to stay after Kairos and have one of those young people walk up to me and say, “You keep telling me about reading the Bible. Where do I start?” I say, “Start with the Gospel of Mark.” They would hand me their Bible and ask, “Where is it?” “It’s right here.” They’ll flip through, look back and grin, “Good, it’s a short book.” I say, “Yeah. Read it more than once.”
We forget how lost people feel, and we create barriers. Sometimes we are well-meaning, but they are barriers just the same.
What drew you to the faith? Was it not those men and women around you who lived authentically? It’s not that they lived perfectly, but that they lived authentically in front of you.
Sometimes in order to share about Jesus, you have to be willing to wear overalls.

12 Things Pastors Can Do To Exponentially Grow Their Church

Practically every pastor and church leader I have ever met wants their church to grow.  They want their churches to make a greater impact in their communities and around the world.  Pastors and church leaders want to see the Kingdom of Heaven expanded by reaching more and more people for Christ.
One of the qualities I have noticed in pastors of growing churches is their humility.  They are willing to learn concepts of growth from not only other churches, but also athletic teams and businesses.  Because of this, I want to make you aware of a globally-known struggling business which regained lost momentum and then grew by 500% – yes 500%.
In the book Harvard Business Review’s 10 Must Reads – On Leadership, the story of Lou Gerstner is told.  In 1979, Gerstner became president of the Travel Related Services (TRS) group of American Express.  The organization was facing severe financial challenges and increased credit card competition.  But under Gerstner’s leadership the organization grew by an annual rate of 18% from 1978-1987.
As I read the reasons whyy TRS grew, I realized the important applications it had for all pastors and church leaders.  The following are 12 Things Pastors Can Do To Exponentially Grow Their Church:
  1. Challenge Widely-Held Beliefs About What Is Needed For Your Church To Grow – Gerstner challenged two widely-held beliefs about his industry.  One of those beliefs was growth was limited.  Pastors of growing churches do not make excuses about why their church is not growing.  Under the direction of the Holy Spirit, they do what is needed for their church to grow.
  2. Develop An Entrepreneurial Culture – Pastors of growing churches celebrate and encourage innovation.  If you keep doing what you have always done, you will continue to get the results you have always gotten.
  3. Hire And Develop Entrepreneurs – If you are going to develop an entrepreneurial culture, you must hire people who fit that culture.
  4. Clear Communication – People are down on what they are not up on.  Pastors of growing churches over-communicate the church’s mission and vision.  Gerstner clearly communicated to all TRS staff the overall direction of the organization.
  5. Reward Intelligent Risk-Taking – Encourage failure and risk-taking.  Pastors of growing churches give their people incentive to take chances.
  6. Discourage Unnecessary Bureaucracy – The congregation of growing churches do not exist to serve the staff.  The staff of growing churches exists to serve the congregation by creating systems to unleash their capacity and potential.
  7. Upgrade Hiring Standards – The answer to every problem is a person.  If you want to get better as a church, if you want to start growing, hire better leaders.  This is what TRS did and experienced exponential growth.
  8. Create Specialized Training – Growing churches are committed to the personal growth and development of its pastors and staff.  Gerstner instituted the TRS Graduate Management Program for its rising leaders.
  9. Expose Potential Leaders To Growth Opportunities – Gerstner began exposing his leaders to rich experiences.  Pastors of growing churches are constantly exposing their leaders to books, conferences, podcasts, and other leaders in an effort to make them better.
  10. Expose Potential Leaders To Senior Leaders – Gerstner began providing an unusual level of exposure to the organization’s top senior leaders.  Pastors of growing churches are intentional about mentoring, discipling and building relationships with younger leaders.
  11. Reward Exceptional Performance – Not everyone gets a trophy at growing churches.  What God is breathing on gets extra budget, extra promotion, and extra attention.
  12. Reach Grown Men – Gerstner began focusing on two neglected constituencies to grow the business – college students and women.  At the time, most credit card advertising was directed solely to businessmen.  Today, there are tremendous resources placed on student and women’s ministry at local churches and rightfully so.  However, the most forgotten constituency in today’s churches are grown men.  If you reach a child for Christ first, there is a 6% chance of reaching the entire family.  If you reach the wife/mother for Christ first, the odds increase.  There is a 18% chance you will reach the entire family.  However, if you reach the father/husband for Christ first, there is a 94% chance of reaching the entire family.  This is exponential growth.  Why then would you target any other group?  If you reach a grown man, you will reach the entire family.

KESAKSIAN HIDUP MISIONARIS CHARLOTTE (LOTTIE) MOON
Lottie Moon melayani sebagai misionaris selama 39 tahun di provinsi Shantung, China, tepatnya di Tungchow dan Pingtu. Sulit untuk menggambarkan keadaan di kota kecil di China pada tahun 1873 saat Lottie pertama kali menginjakkan kaki di kota itu. Lottie sudah terbiasa dengan kehidupan yang serba mewah karena dilahirkan di dalam keluarga pemilik tanah yang kaya raya di bagian Selatan Amerika Serikat. Namun, sekarang, ia harus beradaptasi dengan lingkungan yang sama sekali baru dan asing. Baik dari segi bahasa, budaya, makanan ataupun cara pemikiran, semuanya terasa sangat asing baginya. Adiknya, Edmonia Moon, tiba di China satu tahun sebelumnya dan ia mengalami 'culture shock' atau kekagetan terhadap kebudayaan yang begitu luar biasa sehingga mengalami 'emotional breakdown' atau gangguan secara emosi dan histeris. Adiknya akhirnya harus dipulangkan. Tidak semua orang, misionaris sekalipun, yang dapat bertahan di China pada tahun 1800-an.

Bagi Lottie, semuanya itu tidak menjadi masalah. Dengan penuh semangat, Lottie memulai studi bahasa serta mendalami sejarah dan budaya China. Dari segi pakaian dan tutur kata, ia berusaha untuk menjadi sama seperti orang-orang yang ingin dijangkaunya. Dalam waktu yang singkat, ia telah dapat menguasai bahasa China secara lisan dan beberapa minggu setelah tiba di Tungchow, ia telah melakukan kunjungan dari rumah ke rumah untuk membagikan buku kecil berisi Injil kepada para wanita. Pada waktu itu, badan misi yang mengutusnya tidak mengizinkan wanita untuk mengajar kaum pria.
Dalam bahasa China, orang asing terutamanya orang kulit putih, disebut dengan sebutan "setan asing", tetapi Lottie berhasil membuat anak-anak di kotanya memanggilnya "wanita kue" (cookie lady) dengan selalu menyediakan kue-kue manis yang dibagikan kepada anak-anak. Setelah memakannya kuenya, anak-anak sering kali akan mengajaknya ke rumah mereka dan dari situ Lottie memiliki kesempatan untuk membagikan Injil dengan ibu dari anak-anak tersebut. Selain dari penginjilan, Lottie memulai sebuah sekolah di rumahnya khusus untuk anak-anak perempuan. Dari Tungchow, Lottie mulai melakukan perjalanan misi ke pendalaman dan dalam waktu yang singkat berhasil membawa banyak orang untuk mengenal Tuhan.
Banyak dari antara orang yang diinjilinya adalah buta huruf. Di suatu kota bernama Huanghsien, Lottie meminta bantuan seorang sarjana Konfusius, Li Show Ting, untuk membacakan Alkitab kepada orang Kristen yang baru bertobat. Walaupun pada awalnya Li tidak percaya, tetapi karena hari demi hari ditugaskan membaca Alkitab, ia akhirnya mengakui kebenaran Injil. Sewaktu ia mengaku percaya, saudara-saudara kandungnya menganiayanya dengan memukul dan mencabik-cabik rambutnya, tetapi ia tetap teguh dengan imannya. Pada kemudian hari, saudara Li menjadi seorang penginjil yang terkenal dan dikabarkan telah membaptis lebih dari 10.000 orang selama pelayanannya.
Lottie Moon bekerja siang dan malam demi pengabaran Injil. Dalam waktu 6 bulan, ia telah berhasil mengunjungi sekitar 139 desa. Selama 14 tahun, ia tidak pernah pulang ke Amerika untuk cuti. Walaupun berat, tetapi ia tahu itulah harga yang harus dibayarnya karena ketika itu misionaris yang berangkat ke ladang misi tidak pernah berpikir untuk pulang. Banyak yang disebabkan oleh penyakit dan kekurangan gizi meninggal di tempat pelayanan.
Namun, bagi Lottie, hal yang paling berat baginya adalah masalah kesepian. Dalam suratnya, ia pernah menulis, "Biarlah tidak ada misionaris yang akan mengalami kesepian seperti yang aku alami." Selama bertahun-tahun, Lottie harus melayani sendirian tanpa teman kerja. Namun demikian, Lottie sempat menjalin kembali hubungannya dengan seorang profesor di sekolah teologia di Amerika yang pernah melamarnya sebelum ia memutuskan untuk ke ladang misi. Akan tetapi, pada waktu itu, Lottie menolak lamarannya. Pada tahun 1882, setelah berada di China selama 9 tahun, ia menulis surat kepada keluarganya bahwa ia telah bertunangan dan akan menikah pada tahun itu. Tetapi akhirnya, entah apa alasannya, pertunangannya dengan profesor Crawford Toy dibatalkan. Beberapa tahun kemudian, keponakan dari Lottie pernah bertanya apakah ia pernah jatuh cinta. Lottie menjawab, "Ya, tetapi Tuhan memiliki prioritas yang terutama atas hidupku, dan karena keduanya berkonflik, sangatlah jelas mana yang harus diutamakan." Walaupun ia mengaku tidaklah mudah hidup sendiri, tetapi Lottie tidak pernah mau mundur dari jalan yang sudah dipilihnya. Tahun-tahun setelah itu diwarnai penganiayaan yang dahsyat, perang, dan bencana kelaparan.
Pada tahun 1890, sewaktu jemaat di Shaling dianiaya, Lottie langsung menuju ke tempat itu dan berkata kepada kepala penganiaya di situ, "Jika Anda mencoba untuk memusnahkan gereja ini, Anda harus membunuh saya terlebih dahulu. Yesus memberikan Diri-Nya bagi kami orang percaya. Sekarang, saya siap untuk mati bagi Dia." Dapat dibayangkan betapa anehnya situasi pada saat itu, seorang wanita bertubuh kecil dengan tinggi badan di bawah 130 cm mencoba menghadang massa yang sedang mengamuk. Ada yang berusaha untuk membunuhnya tetapi dapat dihalang oleh yang lain. Lottie tidak pernah meninggalkan jemaat yang sedang dianiaya, ia berada bersama mereka sampai penganiayaan itu berhenti. Salah seorang jemaat, Dan Ho-Bang, diikat ke batang kayu dan dipukul oleh kerabatnya setelah ia menolak untuk menyembah leluhurnya. Meskipun ia menerima pukulan yang tidak terkira kerasnya, ia tetap menolak untuk menyembah leluhurnya. Seperti yang selalu terjadi setelah penganiayaan, banyak orang yang bertobat termasuk orang yang menganiaya karena mereka melihat ketabahan dan kesetiaan orang-orang percaya. Dan, jemaat di Shaling menjadi yang gereja yang kuat dan melakukan banyak penginjilan ke daerah sekitarnya.
Revolusi China bermula saat musim gugur tahun 1911. Lottie yang sudah berusia 71 tahun pada waktu itu menolak untuk mengevakuasi diri, tetapi malah berangkat menuju zona perang. Ia ingin memulai pelayanan medis untuk menangani korban perang di kota Huanghsien. Periode itu merupakan permulaan dari kelaparan yang berkepanjangan, diiringi oleh tersebarnya berbagai wabah penyakit. Pada waktu itu, dana misi sudah tidak lagi tersedia dan Lottie harus menggunakan uangnya sendiri untuk menopang pelayanan. Lottie telah melihat dirinya sebagai orang China, tidak ada lagi tembok yang memisahkan dia dari orang yang dilayaninya. Melihat orang yang kelaparan dan tidak memiliki cukup dana untuk membantu, Lottie sendiri sering kali mengalami kelaparan bersama-sama dengan orang-orang Kristen yang ada di sekitarnya. Pada musim panas tahun 1912, fisiknya mulai melemah. Saat dibawa ke rumah sakit Baptis yang baru dibangun di China, dokter yang merawatnya menyimpulkan bahwa Lottie yang berat badannya hanya 24 kg mengalami kelaparan yang sungguh parah. Diputuskan bahwa Lottie harus segera dibawa pulang ke Amerika. Pada tanggal 12 Desember 1912, ditemani oleh seorang perawat, Lottie meninggalkan China dari pelabuhan di Shanghai. Akan tetapi, dua belas hari kemudian, saat kapal sedang berlabuh di Kobe, Jepang, Lottie mengembuskan napasnya yang terakhir, satu hari sebelum Natal 1912.

Orang percaya yang dipanggil Tuhan untuk bekerja dalam bidang apa pun juga dipanggil untuk memberitakan Injil! Apakah bisa kedua hal ini berjalan seiring dan berbanding lurus tanpa memandang yang satu lebih penting dari yang lain? Untuk mengerti bagaimana 2 hal ini bisa berjalan seiring, maka kita perlu terlebih dahulu mengenal panggilan khusus mengapa diri kita ada di dalam dunia ini. Tuhan memanggil gereja-gereja-Nya untuk membawa kabar baik masuk ke dalam setiap bidang pekerjaan legal yang ada dalam dunia ini, menerangi setiap bagian yang gelap yang masih dikerjakan oleh banyak orang yang terhilang, mulai dari bidang sosial, ekonomi, politik, kesehatan, pendidikan, dan lain sebagainya. Injil Kristus harus segera dinyatakan dalam banyak bidang tersebut. Setiap orang percaya memiliki beban yang sama dalam pemberitaan Injil. Amanat Agung dalam Matius 28:19-20 bukan hanya diberikan untuk mereka yang berkecimpung di dunia pelayanan rohani dan gereja saja, melainkan untuk setiap orang percaya, setiap murid Kristus yang saat ini mengerjakan banyak jenis pekerjaan. Tidak peduli apakah saya seorang tukang sapu jalanan? Apakah saya seorang pemulung sampah? Apakah saya seorang manajer di satu perusahaan? Apakah saya seorang politikus? Apakah saya seorang ahli hukum? Ataukah, saya hanya seorang penjual makanan? Apakah Anda seniman? Selama pekerjaan Saudara bukanlah pekerjaan yang salah, maka Tuhan akan memakai Saudara untuk bersaksi dan memberitakan Injil bagi-Nya. Ketika Injil dinyatakan dalam diri seseorang dan dia percaya, maka Injil akan dinyatakan melalui kehidupannya, termasuk dalam pekerjaannya.

Bila kita telah menemukan dasar kebenaran ini, maka pekerjaan-pekerjaan yang kita kerjakan bukan lagi berpusat pada kebutuhan dan keuntungan diri, melainkan berpusat pada panggilan Kristus untuk menyatakan Injil dan Pribadi-Nya melalui apa yang kita lakukan. Saya bekerja supaya saya bisa memenuhi kebutuhan hidup, apakah salah? Tentu tidak, tetapi ketika saya bekerja dan saya melakukannya untuk Tuhan, saya sedang membawa diri saya pada tujuan yang benar dan semestinya, yaitu "memuliakan Kristus". Seorang yang mengenal Tuhan dan memiliki iman akan memercayai "providensia Allah", Dialah Tuhan yang memelihara umat-Nya. Jadi, jelas tujuan kita ketika kita bekerja sebagai murid Kristus bukan untuk mendapat dan menimbun uang sebanyak mungkin untuk mengusahakan kebahagiaan, tetapi untuk menyatakan Kristus dalam pekerjaan kita bagi jiwa terhilang. Inilah nilai kekal yang bisa kita kerjakan selama kita hidup dalam dunia yang fana ini. Hasil yang akan kita dapatkan pun akan berbeda, kualitas yang akan kita berikan dan capai pun akan berbeda karena Tuhan sendirilah yang bekerja sama dengan kita dan standar Tuhanlah yang kita usahakan.
Apakah ini sesuatu yang mudah? Tentu dalam pelaksanaannya akan sulit sekali, banyak ilah lain yang akan kita jumpai dalam pekerjaan. Mereka siap menggoda dan membawa kita menjauh dari panggilan utama kita. Jika kita melakukan pekerjaan bagi Tuhan, tentu dunia dan banyak orang di sekitar akan menjadi musuh. Percayalah, dunia tidak menerima standar Allah. Janganlah takut, jangan undur, jangan menjadi serupa dengan dunia ini. Dalam Amanat Agung, dalam Matius 28:19-20, Ia berjanji untuk menyertai kita sampai kesudahannya. Berkat ini jauh lebih berharga daripada semua jumlah uang yang kita miliki selama bekerja di dunia ini.
Panggilan utama orang percaya adalah membawa kabar baik di mana pun ditempatkan dan di dalam segala pekerjaan baik yang dipercayakan. Saat ini, kembali kita akan bergumul bersama jika Tuhan tidak memanggil saya menjadi seorang utusan misi atau penginjil, apakah saya masih harus memberitakan Injil? Iya! Jangan tawarkan diri kita untuk tidak memberitakan Injil, Paulus berkata, "Celakalah aku jika aku tidak memberitakan Injil." Lalu, bagaimana cara saya memberitakan Injil sedangkan separuh hari saya lebih saya pakai untuk bekerja dan mencari uang? 1 X 24 jam Tuhan memberikan kita waktu untuk mengenal Injil itu sendiri dan memberitakannya, tentu kita harus mengawalinya dengan bergumul, "apakah pekerjaan yang saya lakukan tidak bertentangan dengan prinsip Alkitab?" Jika tidak, pergumulan selanjutnya "bagaimana saya menyaksikan kasih Kristus dalam pekerjaan saya sehingga ada harapan untuk banyak orang mendengar Injil Kristus melalui apa yang saya lakukan dan saya boleh menjadi saksi bagi mereka?"
Ketika saya melakukan prinsip ini, maka saya sebenarnya sedang melakukan misi Kerajaan Allah. Saya sedang menjadi seorang utusan yang diutus di tengah-tengah masyarakat. Bagaimana langkah nyata untuk memulai membawa Injil dalam pekerjaan saya?
Yohanes 14:12
Injil adalah kabar sukacita, Tuhan mengampuni kesalahan manusia dan membawa manusia kembali pada tujuan yang sebenarnya, yaitu tujuan mulia yang Tuhan berikan. Manusia bisa berdamai kembali dengan Sang Pencipta jagad raya, manusia bisa berdamai kembali dengan diri sendiri, manusia bisa berdamai kembali dengan orang lain, dan manusia bisa berdamai kembali dengan alam. Bekerja dan mengusahakan segala potensi diri adalah mandat yang Tuhan berikan, manusia harus mengelola sumber daya yang ada di luar dirinya dan manusia juga harus mengelola potensi yang ada di dalam dirinya. Lalu, bagaimana langkah praktis kita untuk memberitakan Injil secara pribadi melalui pekerjaan kita? Kita harus memulainya dengan firman Allah dan doa, firman Tuhan akan menyatakan kebenaran yang akan mengubah 180 derajat sudut pandang kita, hidupku bagi Kristus bukan untuk pribadiku lagi (Galatia 2:19-20). "Misi adalah kerinduan hati Allah yang kita mengerti melalui firman Tuhan". Berdoalah, bertanyalah pada Sang Pengutus yang menyusun rencana hidup Anda. Saya ingat jelas ketika pertama kali saya membaca panggilan seorang nabi Yesaya untuk bangsa Israel dalam Yesaya 6, Tuhan bertanya, "Siapakah yang mau pergi untuk Aku?" Yesaya dengan sigap menjawab, "Ini Aku utuslah aku!" Tuhan memerlukan kesiapan Anda untuk pergi mewartakan kabar baik, jangan pedulikan apakah di awal Anda sanggup atau tidak, itu pertanyaan yang sama yang diajukan banyak orang ketika diperhadapkan dengan pemberitaan Injil. Tuhan akan menambah-nambah hikmat dan karunia rohani, menyalakan kembali api penginjilan yang mungkin hampir padam, Tuhan akan melakukan perkara-Nya yang ajaib melalui kita. Bergumullah untuk pekerjaan saudara! Pekerjaan yang membuat kita bahagia menjalaninya bukanlah pekerjaan yang sesuai dengan keinginan kita atau hobi kita, pekerjaan yang akan membuat kita bersukacita menjalaninya adalah pekerjaan yang kita lakukan karena Tuhan ingin kita mengerjakannya. Berdoalah dengan sungguh-sungguh, mohon hikmat dan penyertaan Tuhan. Bagi Anda yang sudah berkeluarga tentu memiliki pergumulan yang jauh lebih berat daripada mereka yang masih lajang. Kita akan dibawa pada pemikiran realistis dan kehidupan beriman, antara logika dan iman kepada Allah. Bekerjalah untuk mewartakan kabar baik, Tuhan yang mengutus adalah Tuhan yang bertanggung jawab memelihara kehidupan kita. Tuhan Yesus memberkati.
