Proof Of The #1 Thing You Need To Improve As A Church, Business, Non-Profit Or Sports Team

Has your church plateaued or is declining?  Is your business missing goals month after month, quarter after quarter, year after year?  Is your non-profit unfunded?  Is your athletic team no longer competitive?  Do you need to change an unhealthy culture?
If so, there is a simple answer.  As pointed out by ESPN’s Colin Cowherd, let’s identify the last six major United States championship sports teams:
  1. Duke Men’s Basketball coached by Mike Krzyzewski.  For more on the five-time national champion Coach K, click here, here and here.
  2. UConn Women’s Basketball coached by Geno Auriemma.  For more on the dominance of the 10-time national champion coach, click here.
  3. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.  For more on the four-time Super Bowl winning head coach, click here and here.
  4. Ohio State Buckeyes head football coach Urban Meyer.  For more on the three-time national champion head coach, click here, here and here.
  5. San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy.  For more on the three-time World Series champ and future Hall of Famer, click here and here.
  6. San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.  For more on the five-time NBA champion and longest tenured head coach in pro sports, click here and here.
What do these six head coaches have in common?  They are best leaders in their respective sports.
What is the #1 thing you need to improve as a church, business, non-profit or sports team?  Get a great leader.  It really is that simple – if you get a great leader, you will get a great team.  Great leaders build great organizations.  They identify and hire great people.  Great people want to work for them.
The question is are you willing to do whatever is necessary in terms of compensation, benefits, environment, opportunity, access and influence to secure the services of a great leader?
In this interview with Fox 2’s Charlie LeDuff, new Michigan Wolverine head football coach Jim Harbaugh was asked if he is worth his $5 million annual salary.  Harbaugh responded, “No.  I like making a buck just like the next guy. I’m not doing five times as much work as somebody else or doing more work than someone who’s not the head football coach at the University of Michigan so to answer your question honestly I would have to say no.”
Harbaugh is right.  He is not worth $5 million per year.  If you look at the amount of revenue he will generate for the University of Michigan over the next several years, he is worth considerably MORE.
Just like the Michigan football team will undoubtedly improve and now has a significantly brighter future, so will your organization if you hire a great leader.
Are you willing to do what is necessary today to acquire the services of a great leader?
