When A Leader Feels They Have Nothing Left To Give

There comes a time in every leader’s life when they feel they have nothing left to give.  Throughout my life I have seen many leaders deal with this issue.
Many of these leaders simply quit.  They leave their families.  They succumb to temptation.  They begin destroying everything and everyone around them.  Many trade real things for counterfeit experiences.  They lack emotional stability.  Candidly, they do not have what it takes.
But there are also leaders who feel they have nothing left to give but do none of these things.  They stay in the game and persevere.
You see ALL Christian leaders will face times when they feel they have nothing left to give.  There will always be times when they feel in over their head.  Can you relate?
It may be counter-intuitive but this is exactly where you want to be as a Christian leader.
The reason for this is a concept called The Gift Of The Gap.
If you are leading a God-sized task, common sense should tell you it is beyond your human capacity.  There is a gap between what God wants done and what you are able to do.  The Gap can only be filled by Jesus Christ.
Being in over your head, being in positions that are beyond your capacity, leading tasks beyond your competencies or connections, force you to press into God.  This is exactly where you should be.  You should be pressing into and relying on Jesus Christ to do what you cannot do.  It is in The Gap you rely on Jesus to do what only He can do.
There is a difference between Leader Development and Leadership Development.
Leader Development is recognizing The Gap and becoming the type of leader God can use to accomplish His tasks and assignments.
Leadership Development is developing the skills needed to accomplish His tasks and assignments.
Successful leaders realize they must focus as much on Leader Development as Leadership Development.
The Gift Of The Gap reminds us how much we need Jesus.  It reminds us God is still at work in our lives.  The Gap reminds us God has His hand on our lives.  It tells us to stretch because there is growth still left for us.  The Gap tells us Jesus still has things He wants to accomplish in and through our lives and leadership.  The Gap tells us our best days are still ahead.
So when you feel you have nothing else to give, DO NOT QUIT.  Instead, PRESS INTO JESUS.  It is then He will fill The Gap and do things through your life and leadership you never thought were possible.
