The opening day concluded with Summit favorite Patrick Lencioni.  Just in case you need an introduction, Patrick is the author of 10 business books that have sold nearly 5 million copies, including The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.  The Wall Street Journal called him one of the most sought after business speakers in America, and he consults on topics related to leadership and organizational health.  Patrick’s upcoming release, The Ideal Team Player, explores the three essential virtues that accelerate teamwork and predict team success.

  1. The Ideal Team Player is Humble.
  2. You are more interested others than yourself.
  3. Lacking self-confidence is a violation of humility.
  4. A person who denies their own abilities tend not to speak up at meetings.
  5. Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less.
  6. The Ideal Team Player is Hungry.
  7. They hate the idea of anyone thinking they are a slackard.
  8. The Ideal Team Player is Smart.
  9. This is not intellectual smarts. This is people smarts, common sense about people.
  10. A person who is intelligent but does not treat people well is not smart.
  11. The Pawn is humble but not hungry or smart.
  12. The Bulldozer is hungry but is not humble or smart.
  13. They get things done but there is a trail of dead bodies behind them.

  15. We cannot tolerate people who are extremely lack in one of these areas.

  19. These people survive in organizations. They usually do enough just to get by.
  20. If people have humility I have a lot of time for them.

  22. They’re hard-driving and make people think they’re about the team.
  23. They don’t care about anybody but themselves but they hide it.
  24. When we develop our people, we have to have the courage to talk to them and let them know.
  25. We have to have the courage as a leader to remind people they’re doing it again.
  26. Generally we overemphasize technical skills.
  27. We tend to over-focus that which is measurable and you can put on a resume.
  28. When you interview people, ask them the questions more than once.
  29. A big part of humility is forgiveness.
  30. Stop doing silo interviews.
  31. Scare people with sincerity.

  33. Steph Curry doesn’t like attention.
